How can I tell if the Betta fish is female?

I adopted two, each with own bowl (1 gal.). One, Pico, is very orange and much more active. The other, Harold is very dark and sort of blue. Not as fancy as Pico and must more restive. Please advise as I don't want to fail my first Betta adoption.
