Can Wayne Rooney play upfront as a lone-striker?

If not, then what do u think is his best position? central attacking midfield like the Stevie G role at Liverpool? Becus that was definately his best position a couple of years back, now Fergie is trying 2 turn him into an out-and-out striker, is it working? and if so, then he must be able 2 play on his own at times right? like a Torres or a Drogba, get me? It's a position Sven Goran-Eriksson has played him in the past, but it never seemed 2 work, watz changed since them days and why do u think it may be sumthing he can adapt to for those that do think its his best position? basically is Rooney a natural striker or not?
