Ionic & Covelant Bonding?

I am confused about the difference between ionic bonding and covalent bonding. I know that covalent bonding has to do with sharing electrons, but I'm not so sure of 'what' is sharing. Ionic bonding is when atoms are joined together by the attraction of oppositely charged particles? And how can you figure out if something is a ionic or covalent bond?
