Can animals be depressed by reduced sunlight the same as some people?

I live in Washington state (Olympia) and was surprised the other day, to read that Seattle has one of the highest suicide rates in the country, presumably because of the long periods of grey sky and rain. I've also heard that some people become depressed during winter because of shorter daylight hours. I was a bit fascinated by this and wondered if pets have ever been doented as having similar feelings about it? My cat doesn't seem to mind.
