Why do many seniors keep their family home well beyond retirement?

I live in Ottawa, Canada. Over the past number of years, I have noticed that in suburban areas in a number of places, once most or all of the children in a family have moved out, the house in which they were raised in is kept for a long time after this point. This is widespread. My feeling is the following about this. The parents want to keep their house for when children visit and surburban environments. It seems like some sort of attachment to what they posses.
